The Intercollegiate Tennis Association is pleased to renew its commitment to the ongoing fight to eliminate poverty in the United States of America through Tennis For America, a year of service program designed for former college tennis players.
To date, the ITA, through the support of the AmeriCorps VISTA program, has placed 12 Tennis For America VISTA Fellows at seven USTA Foundation National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) locations around the country. The third year of this three-year pilot project places six Tennis For America VISTA Fellows at five NJTL centers; Border Youth Tennis Exchange, Oakland, CA; Junior Tennis Champions Center, College Park, MD; Marty Hennessy Inspiring Children’s Foundation, Las Vegas, NV; TeamFame, Newport, RI; and Youth Tennis San Diego, San Diego, CA.
“Tennis For America has been an ambitious project for the ITA and we are very pleased with all the amazing work the VISTA Fellows have completed over the last couple of years,” said ITA COO David Mullins. “We are fortunate to have partnered with some incredible USTA Foundation NJTLs throughout this project and we are delighted to welcome a new partner this year in the Youth Tennis San Diego NJTL and Executive Director, and former University of the Pacific Head Men’s Tennis Coach, Ryan Redondo.”
The second year of Tennis For America wrapped up in August, 2022. Some of the accomplishments of the four Tennis For America VISTA Fellows include the following:
- Recruited 57 volunteers who committed over 500 hours of community service
- Raised over $35,000 in cash and in-kind donations
- Established seven new partnerships to assist with additional resources
- Awarded over $60,000 in grant money
The ITA will be providing updates on the progress of the Tennis For America VISTA Fellows, Class of 2023, in the coming months.
